A category name does not guarantee strength, steel quality, waterproofing or suitability for a particular task. Check the actual specifications and manufacturer instructions. Do not assume a general-purpose knife is designed for prying, impact work or chopping.
A fixed blade avoids a folding joint but needs protected sheath storage. A folding knife packs the blade into its handle, while introducing a pivot and, on some models, a locking mechanism. Compare fixed blades, folding knives and multi-tools according to the functions you need.
